I have lived in China for many years and have produced jewelry designs in pearl jewelry, freshwater pearl necklaces, pearl earrings, bridal jewelry, and jewelry with semi-precious stones for the biggest and the Best names in the business! Being able to speak basic Mandarin Chinese helped me to develop freshwater pearls with the pearl farmers in the province of Zhuji in Maniland China.

Pearls take 2 to 4 years to grow and develop “nacre” before they can be harvested. One must have patience. However, China has a huge land mass and natural lakes and freshwater ponds which are a perfect habitat for growing freshwater pearls.

Freshwater cultured pearls come from freshwater mussels and are produced by the countries of Japan, China, and the United States. Freshwater shell and pearl mussels are from the species called Unionidae, from which about 20 different varieties are commercially harvested. The tones of the freshwater cultured pearls are dictated by the mother shell. White is the most common color for natural pearls, followed by pink. Other colors depend on the type of mussels.

Freshwater pearls and cultured pearls are one in the same. The pearls are grown in freshwater and cultured to encourage natural nacre and a deep luster. Some people think cultured pearls are fake pearls. They are not. They are real pearls. Farm-raised pearls are real pearls grown in fresh water from mussels while saltwater pearls are grown from oysters. The chemical which creates nacre produced by the freshwater pearl mussel that
forms the pearls is identical to the chemical produced by the saltwater pearl oyster.

When a foreign material such as a piece of shell, a bead, or muscle tissue is inserted into a mussel and cannot be expelled; the live mollusk, in order to reduce irritation, coats the irritant with the a secretion which it uses for shell-building called nacre. Nacre is the pearlized luster surface which covers the pearls.

In order to culture freshwater mussels, pearl farmers slightly open their shells, cutting slits into the mantle tissue. They insert small pieces of live mantle tissue or other irritant shapes into those slits. In
freshwater mussels that insertion alone is sufficient to start nacre production which is similar to tearing. The mussels tear just as a human eye would tear if an irritant were in the eye. Most cultured freshwater pearls are composed entirely of nacre, just like their natural freshwater and natural saltwater shells.

Now China is in what we call the Cultured Pearl Revolution. Starting in the 1990s, China surprised the world gem market with products that are revolutionizing pearling. The shapes, luster, and colors of the new Chinese production often match original Japanese Biwah quality and sometimes even surpass it.

The Appeal of Freshwater Pearl Jewellery

Freshwater pearls originate from freshwater mussels, which live in ponds, lakes and rivers. Traditionally, they are produced in Japan and the United States on small scales but currently China dominates the freshwater pearl market. Production has greatly improved from the 1990s through to 2000s in China. According to the Times Online, China produces approximately 90% of pearl necklaces globally and with 1,600 tonnes of pearls produced annually, accounting for more than 95 per cent of world pearl production.

Prior to the 90s, China was accused for undermining the pearl market with poor quality pearls. Over the last two decades, China starts to commercial its pearl production processes and investing in R&D to eliminate mussel related diseases. China is now making much higher quality pearls at low costs, stirring its counterpart pearl markets. The high-end pearls from China are freshwater farmed, a process that has become increasingly automated, allowing producers to sell their pearls at lower prices.

While the Chinese freshwater pearls are not the same as the saltwater forms, they do make the gems more affordable to the average consumers. The price gap reveals remaining differences in hue and lustre between saltwater pearls and freshwater pearls. It is very easy for a jeweller to spot these differences when comparing freshwater pearls against saltwater pearls.

A white south sea pearl necklace strandis gleaming with silvery white pearls whereas an equivalent size freshwater pearl necklace with similar blemish free pearls will have a slightly chalky hue. This is largely due to the species of mussels used. Freshwater mussels are usually pinky or orangey on the insides, resulting in less than whiter pearls. However, freshwater pearl necklace with great shape and surface costs much less than south sea pearl necklace or Tahitian pearl necklace, sometimes at about 10 times less or more.

Affordability aside, freshwater pearls have solid nacre, making them quite durable, resisting chipping, wear, and degeneration under normal wearing conditions.

Chinese Pearls Losing Luster By Overproduction

Guangzhou City, China, Oct. 5) International Pearl Exposition and Auction has recently been held in Guangzhou, China. Merchants and bidders, both at home and abroad, were deeply impressed by the rare and valuable pearls from all over the world. However, its hard to find the well-known domestic Zhejiang Pearls among the glittering jewels.

With the fame as the “No. 1 global bidding”, International Pearl Exposition and Auction is held two or three times every year. This year, we had the honor to hold the exposition and auction in Guangzhou. It should have been a very good opportunity for the local sellers to display their pearls without traveling abroad. Nevertheless, some 40 local buyers came just to bid with those of the same trade.

“Most of the displayed pearls are from oversea producer.” Said Mark Wu from Topearl Jewelry Inc., “China leads the world in production of saltwater akoya pearls, freshwater pearls also account for 90 percent of the worlds output. But we had very few qualified entries.” This is nothing new but a reflection of the current situation of the international pearl market. Since medium and low grade pearls are in the majority in China, we only hold 10 percent of trading volume in the worlds pearl market. Each year, China mainly exported low-valued un-finished pearl beads and strands, not high added-value pearl jewelry such as pearl necklace, bracelet and pearl earrings etc. The absence of Zhejiang Pearls simply reflected our embarrassment among the general Chinese pearl industry.

How to upgrade Chinese Pearls including Zhejiang Pearls becomes our main concern. China has good weather and temperature for the pearl cultivation. Based on these good natural conditions, our pearls have good quality themselves. Therefore, low added value is the root of the problem. Compared with the international technology, we still have a long way to go in pearl processing and treatment, such as bleaching, polishing and design.

Although we fall a little behind, we see a very good chance to increase the value of our pearls. Union of Asian Jewelry has already been founded in Guangzhou. And from now on, the International Pearl Exposition and Auction will be held in Guangzhou every year. Jiangsu and Zhejiang, Chinas bases of freshwater pearls and pearl jewelry, will have own platform for pearl exhibits.
